Frequently Asked Questions.

How long does the pick-up/drop-off process take?

Plan on spending around 30 minutes at our depot when you arrive to pick-up your campervan. This should give us time to show you your van’s awesome features, explain how they work and complete the paperwork. If you have questions about the van or your trip, this is a great chance to have those answered before setting off.

Van drop-off is faster. We should have you in and out in about 15 minutes, but we love hearing about your trip and any feedback on our vans, feel free to hang around and let us know. If you have a flight to catch, but still want to share your experience, you can always email us later. Please remember that rentals need to be back at our depot by 5pm.

What is your roadside assistance policy?

We use AA Roadside Assistance should you get into any trouble. Please be aware that there is a service fee that the AA charges for any non-mechanical issues, such as a flat battery or punctured tire.

See our Terms and Conditions if you want to know more.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please note, if your cancellation is due to COVID 19, please see our seperate COVID 19 cancellation policy below.

If you cancel your booking one 1 month (or more) prior to your pick-up date we will refund your entire deposit (less any credit card fees and an administration fee of $75.00 NZD).

If you cancel your booking between 8 days and 1 calendar month prior to your pick-up date we will refund you 50% of the total hire fee.

If you cancel your booking 7 days or less prior to your pick-up date, or you don’t turn up on the day, then I’m afraid we will have to charge you the full hire fee.

In order to cancel your campervan reservation (at any time), we’ll need notice in writing. An email is fine.

We can’t offer refunds or discounts for early returns, so we suggest keeping the van for the entire length of your booking, and checking a few more things off your bucket list.

For more details about cancellation please see our Terms and Conditions.

Where can I camp in my van?

We love campervans for the freedom they bring when travelling throughout New Zealand. There are a lot of options when it comes to camping. New Zealand and local councils have rules and regulations around where you can park up for the night. There are plenty of options from; holiday parks, Department of Conservation (DOC) sites and freedom camping sites.

For more detailed information we’ve written up a Van Stories post about camping here. While you're at it, why not check out our article on responsible freedom camping, or our trip itineraries for recommendations on where to go and what to do while you’re in New Zealand.

Are there any road or travel restrictions?

You’re allowed to travel wherever you like in New Zealand with the exception of a few places. Please do not drive the campervan on any beaches, Skippers Road (Queenstown), Ball Hutt Road (Mt Cook), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Bluff Road that runs between Kuaotunu and Matarangi and North of Colville Township (Coromandel Peninsula), or any roads marked four-wheel drive only.

Off-roading is not allowed in our vehicles. We’re cool with you taking our vans on well maintained gravel roads but please use your best judgement. Vehicle size, clearance and weather conditions should always be taken into consideration when driving on an unpaved road.

You can read the fine print regarding vehicle damage in our Terms and Conditions.

When should I reserve my campervan?

Our summer campervan rentals book up fast, so don’t delay during peak season. We suggest making your reservation at least a month in advance, but you can always lock it down months ahead to avoid missing out.

Occasionally, we’ll have a last minute deal. If you’re a gambler, feel free to reach out any time. You may just get lucky (1% off for the fine print readers CONGRATS4READING).

What is my responsibility when renting a Campervan?

For us, the biggest responsibility while renting and travelling in a campervan is environmental responsibility. Remember this mantra “Leave No Trace”. We need your help to keep New Zealand beautiful for us, other visitors and future generations.

Your next responsibility is to use your best judgement. Take weather and road conditions into consideration, don’t drive when you’re tired, pull over and rest in your moving bed. Always double check that you’re feeding the van the correct type of fuel (it’s on the flap).

Mountain passes are full of variables, check the road condition ahead and keep your eyes peeled on the road condition signs. Damages caused by poor driver choices may result in additional repair costs and fees.

We are committed to running a clean, safe, and well maintained fleet of campervans. We replace tyres regularly for daily wear and tear. If tyre or windscreen damage occurs due to a road hazard or driver error, we’ll have to charge you for the replacement.

Finally, look after our vans! We put a lot of love into each build and want them to be awesome for the next adventures. Respect the rules and reference the van manual.
