Featured Van: Sam’s Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 Campervan Conversion

Heading off road was Sam’s biggest priority when he asked us to convert his 4WD Mercedes Sprinter 316 into a campervan. Coming from the 4x4 world, Sam wanted something that could easily handle any track, yet was comfortable enough for his whole family.

Check out how we turned this Sprinter into the ultimate family off road campervan.

A few of our favourite things about this Mercedes Sprinter Campervan Conversion:

Adventure Rig

Sam didn’t want to compromise comfort or off road capabilities, so we dreamed up the perfect solution to allow him to have both. For hitting the ski fields to finding roads less travelled, we kitted out the campervan with a suspension lift and all-terrain tyres for more clearance and off road capability, plus added a rear tyre carrier to allow for an underslung water tank.

We added a custom roof rack and side ladder for storing bulky items, allowing for more living space in the van. It also makes the campervan look pretty badass, if we do say so ourselves.

Seats and Sleeps Four

What’s the secret to fitting more people comfortably in a campervan? Bunk beds. We custom-built a retractable top bunk bed to maximise space — meaning Sam can pull out the beds only when needed. We added additional captain chair swivel passenger seats, as well, allowing for more passengers and comfy places to sit when camping.

All the Kit

For real, all of it. We loaded up this Sprinter with some sweet features that not only look sweet, but provide all-season functionality and comfort. The Isoterm fridge and freezer means post-swim ice creams are possible, while the diesel heater provides easy-to-use warmth on ski trips. We made sure to fully insulate for extra toasty-ness and kitted the van out with a Maxxair Maxxfan for ultimate ventilation. Finally, the big power system — two 140AH lithium batteries — allows for off grid days.

Cool Customisation

The amount of space allowed us to play around with some cool customisation bits. We added a rear pull out tray with a drain so Sam and the fam can dry wet ski gear without worrying about moisture buildup and included a rear diesel heater outlet to keep things dry. The overhead cabinets feature sliding doors and undermounted LED strip lighting for helpful but not overwhelming night lights, plus a touch of hominess.

The over cab cupboard has an integrated custom door and we designed the custom roof rack and ladder design in-house. These slick features help make the campervan superfunctional for Sam and his family.

Sam’s off road campervan dreams allowed us to build an exciting campervan jam-packed with custom features. It’s the kind of van that simply screams for adventure, and we could be a teeny bit jealous it’s not a rig of our own. We’re thrilled with the outcome and look forward to seeing Sam out in the backcountry!
